By Lauren Bradway, Ph.D.

As a speech-language pathologist parents consult me when their child is having difficulty in communication skills, reading, and language arts. After evaluating a child, I plan a course of action designed to teach specific skills, and always, that plan involves board games and card games. Children learn best through active play, and it's important for them to get excited about what they're learning. Playing games with children makes the therapy hour much more interesting for me as well!

Games like Malarky® teach critical skills in language processing including auditory comprehension, auditory perception, and auditory memory. In addition, playing these games builds speaking and reading vocabulary, teaches thinking skills, and enhances verbal communication. And all this is accomplished in a non-threatening, playful way. The result for me has been that my young clients look forward to returning for their appointments.
